Kathmandu. U.S. President Donald Trump has announced that he will suspend the proposed 50 per cent tariff on Canadian goods for three days.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said, “I have suspended the 50% tariff in Canada for 3 days. This tariff was scheduled to come into effect yesterday morning. The decision to postpone it comes as Canada and the U.S. have reached an agreement after finalizing the documents. ’
The announcement comes two hours before the new tariffs on Canadian goods are set to take effect. The two countries have been at loggerheads over a number of issues, including tariffs on American automobiles and a ban on the sale of American wine by several Canadian provinces.
Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney have met twice this week. Negotiators from both countries have been engaged in talks since July. Trump had threatened to impose new tariffs by setting an August 19 deadline.
“Significant progress has been made in the negotiations,” Carney said in a letter posted on X. However, there is some important work to be done. —Agency
