Progress of national pride projects disappointing, only 15.5% budget spent

Kathmandu. The progress of the national pride projects of the country is disappointing.

The Ministry of Finance today released the current fiscal year 2082. This is evident from the half-yearly review report of the budget of 2018. A total of Rs 67.08 billion has been allocated for 23 projects in the current fiscal year. However, only Rs 10.39 billion or 15.49 per cent has been spent even after half a year. Which is less than the target.

According to the report, the construction works of Tamakoshi Hydropower Project, Gautam Buddha and Pokhara Regional Airport and Melamchi Water Supply Project (first phase) have been completed and come into operation. The Pushpalal Highway has achieved 81.73 per cent physical progress, the Postal Highway 74.35 per cent and the Kathmandu-Tarai Fast track 42.13 per cent so far.

Existing Challenge

Problems in land acquisition and distribution of compensation, complexities in the use of forest area, lack of inter-agency coordination and obstacles at local level are some of the major problems.

Corrective measures

Measures have been identified to award the contract only after completing the preparatory project (DPR and land acquisition), to prepare a separate legal and administrative structure and to ensure the tenure of the project chief.
