Kathmandu. Nowadays, people often think of living in a quiet place after retirement. But have you ever imagined dedicating your entire life and life savings to the ocean?
According to a recent CNN report, the 642-foot-long, eight-storey cruise ship ‘Villa V Odyssey’ has made this dream a reality. For its passengers, the ship is not just a vacation trip but also a permanent home.
Sharon Lane, a former teacher in California who is over 70 years old, has left her home and made the ship her home. Let’s find out what life is like, how much it costs to stay and what are the amenities available on this unique cruise.
The ship, operated by Villa V Residences, had a turbulent start. Due to technical difficulties, it departed for its first official voyage in September 2024. By June 2025, its initial operational problems were resolved and people could stay on the ship. The recently refurbished nearly 30-year-old ship is expected to rule the oceans for at least another 15 years.
Cruise accommodation cost
According to a CNN report, there are various occupancy plans available on this ship. It is much more affordable and accessible than other luxury accommodation ships such as ‘The World’. It starts at $35 million.
Prices start at $59,999 for a 5-year ownership plan and $99,999 for a full ownership. The lowest price starts with windowless cabins.
By 2025, the monthly maintenance fee for dual occupancy is $2,000 per person per month. The single occupancy is $3,000 per month. The company has also expanded rental opportunities for those who want to experience the aircraft directly before purchasing it. However, the number of cabin owners is currently three times more than renters.
What features are available?
In exchange for a monthly fee, residents get a luxurious and carefree lifestyle. Daily meals and soft drinks are free. Wine is also included in the dinner. Room cleaning and laundry facilities are provided once every two weeks at no extra charge.
The ship offers round-the-clock room service, high-speed Wi-Fi, and free doctor visits. The ship goes around the world continuously. It allows residents to explore beautiful destinations from Tokyo to Hawaii and the Maldives.
What is life like in the ocean?
It is not only a means of travel but also a running mini-city. More than half of the passengers are traveling alone. They are creating a strong family-like community on the ship. The food here is not just a food, but a means of socializing. People sit at the dinner table and talk for one and a half to two hours. Karaoke, movie nights, dances, trivia nights and amateur plays organized by the passengers themselves are held on the ship.
Many people are working from home on ships and sharing their stories on social media or through blogs. Some are even living with their pets. Since the ship is so large, those seeking peace can visit the library and read books. For fitness enthusiasts there is a modern gym and treadmills overlooking the beautiful sea view. –Agency
