Kathmandu. Oil is globally important. One barrel of crude oil is used to make a very useful product.

One barrel contains 42 gallons or 159 liters of oil. When processed, it produces a variety of products. According to the below infographic, the main products obtained from a barrel are as follows:

Petrol is the largest producer of crude oil barrels. That’s 42 percent. Diesel is in second place with 27 percent. Jet fuel produces 10 per cent and LPG (4 per cent).

Petrochemical feedstocks (raw materials for making plastics, medicines, etc.) account for 7 percent of the production. Marine fuels or heavy fuels produce 5 per cent oil, lubricants and waxes 2 per cent, and asphalt 3 per cent. These percentages may vary slightly depending on the refinery and the type of crude oil.

Where TAG_OPEN_strong_42 are these products processed?

Crude oil is processed in refineries. There are thousands of refineries around the world. Major countries such as the US, China, India, Russia and Saudi Arabia have large refineries.

In the refinery, crude oil is heated to different temperatures and separated. This is called fractional distillation. Lighter products such as gasoline go up. While the heavier products remain down.

How are these products distributed?

After producing products at the refinery, they are shipped to the country and around the world by pipelines, tanker ships, trains and trucks.

Petrol and Diesel: are delivered at petrol pumps.

Jet fuel goes to airports.

LPG (Gas): is delivered to households in cylinders.

Petrochemical: is used in plastics, paints, tires, and pharmaceutical factories.

asphalt: is used for road construction.

Oil companies play an important role in distribution due to government and market demand. Prices depend on the international market, supply and demand.

Even today, our daily lives depend heavily on oil. Cars, airplanes, electricity and plastic items are all linked to oil. But the world is now moving towards electric vehicles and renewable energy (solar, wind). Oil demand may decline in the future, but it remains the foundation of the energy and chemical industries.

One barrel of crude oil provides us with not only fuel but hundreds of useful things. About 42 per cent of petrol and 27 per cent of diesel, as well as raw materials made up of jet fuel, gas and plastics, are produced in refineries and then distributed globally. The oil industry is an important part of the economy and plays a major role in powering our modern way of life. –Agency
