This decision means that if someone’s work permit expires tomorrow, it will no longer be automatically extended today. The rules were published on Wednesday and will take effect on Thursday.
So far, if someone’s work permit expires, they will automatically receive a 540-day extension. You will have to renew your permit within this period. However, this will no longer be possible. Therefore, questions may arise whether they will lose their jobs and leave the United States after their work permits expire.
The Trump administration’s decision will severely impact millions of foreign professionals working in the US on H-1B visas, H-4 SP permit permits or STEM OPT (Optional Practical Training).
