Kathmandu. New Delhi: The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of delhi police on Sunday arrested the main accused in the Rs 30-crore insurance fraud case with a fake car accident claim.
According to a delhi police release, accused Dinesh Bansal is accused of running a large racket with former employees of Tata AIG General Insurance Company, surveyor licensed by the insurance authority and motor workshop operator for fake vehicle accident claims.
The arrest was made following a complaint filed in 2022 on the basis of a complaint filed by Virendra Pal Singh, head of Tata AIG’s fraud control unit.
“The company has alleged that six garages across Delhi-NCR, in connivance with four former employees, three licensed surveyors and some insurers, submitted fake invoices for maintenance which was never done, resulting in the insurer being duped of around Rs 30 crore,” a senior police officer told a press conference.
Detailed investigation has uncovered several irregularities, including submission of multiple high-value claims for the same vehicle under different insured, use of the same picture for different accident claims, mismatched versions of incidents provided by drivers and owners, and details of vehicle registration being tampered with.
The accused is alleged to have made two to three fake insurance claims per vehicle annually, mainly citing airbag damage. Each claim ranged from Rs 2 lakh to Rs 4.5 lakh, and more than 500 such claims were filed between February 2019 and August 2021.
“To facilitate fraud, Bansal offered to pay around 15 per cent of the amount per claim to Tata AIG employees. The looted money was sent through eight fake companies with the help of a chartered accountant, who allegedly took 10 per cent commission for their services.
Bansal was arrested from Samaypur Badli industrial area after technical surveillance. Two former Tata AIG officials – Pradeep Rana, chief manager, and Deepak Sharma, an examiner , were arrested on April 14 on charges of aiding fraudulent activities. Another accused, Raju Singh, has been in judicial custody since August 2024.
Bansal, a Class 10 pass out and a native of Haryana, moved to Delhi 25 years ago. He initially ran a business of selling old cars before starting a vehicle maintenance workshop.
