Kathmandu. U.S. President Donald Trump has announced a 50% tariff on Canadian imports. Trump said the move was in response to America’s “unequal treatment” of cars, dairy products and alcohol.
According to the US administration, the new tariffs will take effect within 30 days. The decision is expected to further escalate trade tensions between the two countries.
The tax covers many everyday items, including products such as wine, hockey sticks and cement. However, many of Canada’s major exports, including energy, potash, critical minerals and fish, are not included.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said his government was ready to intensify trade talks with the United States in the coming weeks. In a statement posted on X, he called the US decision a “unilateral trade act”.
According to Carney, the action was initiated after the United States imposed a series of tariffs in violation of the Canada-U.S.-Mexico agreement. He also referred to his statement as a “threat to the sovereignty of Canada”.
This is seen as a reference to Trump’s earlier statement. He called for Canada to become the 51st state of the United States. –Agency
