Kathmandu. It has been 10 years since the health insurance program came into operation. The health insurance program was launched from Kailali district on April 9, 2015.
So far, the health insurance programme has been institutionalized in 750 local levels of 77 districts. In this sense, the geographical expansion of the health insurance program has been found to be very effective. It has been established as the largest social security program in Nepal.
Although the program has reached almost all over the country, 382 localities have at least one first service point. According to the Health Insurance Board, it needs to be expanded further. Currently, there are 425 first service points across the country.
As the expansion of the program accelerates, there seems to be a sharp increase in the number of insured. The number of insured has jumped 178 times in eight years from 2016 to 2024. In 2016, the number of insured people was 32,000, which increased to 56.80 lakh in 2024.
Health insurance service utilization rate in FY 2081. By 1982, it had reached 92.8 percent. The utilization rate of service among the households paying the premium is 93 percent. Which is very high.
The government has effectively included the poor, senior citizens and people with disabilities in this program. Currently, 1,631,279 people are active in the program, 1,236,581 are senior citizens (above 70 years of age and 192,865 people with severe disabilities).
So far, 505 health service providers are affiliated to the health insurance programme. Of them, 441 are government, 37 private and 27 community 27.
Corrective steps
- OPD services: Limit up to Rs 25,000.
- Additional protection up to Rs 1 lakh for eight types of serious diseases.
