Kathmandu. The problem of infertility is increasing worldwide. In addition to this, the demand for in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment is also increasing. However, due to its high cost, this modern treatment method is out of reach for many couples.

According to experts, bringing IVF treatment under insurance coverage can increase access and improve treatment outcomes. IVF is a multi-stage treatment process. These include ovarian activation, egg retrieval, in-vitro fertilization and embryo transfer. The full cycle usually takes two to three weeks to complete. However, in many cases, success requires multiple cycles.

According to medical experts, IVF success rates vary significantly with age. For women under 35 years of age, the average success rate per cycle is 50 to 55 percent. On the other hand, for women aged 38 to 40, the rate drops to 20 to 30 percent and decreases with age.

Although effective, IVF treatment is very expensive. In the US, a cycle can cost anywhere from $12,000 to $30,000. This includes the cost of medicines and other procedures. In Europe, although the cost is significantly lower, it is no less than a few thousand euros. For this reason, many patients have to delay or discontinue treatment due to financial constraints.

According to a medical expert, the cost of infertility treatment has become the biggest hurdle. Many couples begin treatment but are unable to complete the entire process due to financial constraints.

In this case, insurance coverage is considered an important solution. In countries where IVF is partially or fully covered by insurance, patients are more likely to complete the prescribed treatment cycles. In addition, there is a growing trend towards safer treatment methods, such as fewer embryo transfers, that reduce the risk of multiple pregnancies.

However, some US states mandate insurance coverage for infertility treatment. It has many limitations (e.g. a fixed number of cycles or a maximum outside limit).

On the other hand, many European countries offer more benefits than those covered under the public health system. In the Netherlands, for example, up to three IVF or ICSI cycles are covered under certain circumstances.

Experts believe that as awareness about infertility grows, insurance companies and corporate entities may seriously consider introducing fertility benefits for employees in the future. For thousands of couples, expanding IVF insurance coverage could mean an end to a long period of uncertainty and a real opportunity to start a family. –Agency
