Kathmandu. On the second day of the anti-corruption protest in Kathmandu on Wednesday, a rally turned violent, causing damage to many public and private property.
Educational institutions in many places were also destroyed after undesirable elements entered the rally against police repression that killed more than 20 young students.
The attackers also targeted Global College in central Baneshwor. The invaders set the college building on fire, destroying the physical structures, furniture, library, laboratory, café and other structures of the college. Shreyam Chaulagain, a class 12 student of the college, was also killed when security personnel opened fire while participating in the demonstration of Gen G on Tuesday.
The college is run by Professional Educators Limited. A year ago, Nepal Life Insurance Company had invested Rs 1.33 billion in the company’s share of Professional Educators. Out of this, Global College International invested Rs 737.2 million for 35.32 percent stake and Rs 600 million for 47.62 percent stake in Uniglobe College.
The extent of the fire is yet to be assessed. The damage will be confirmed only after the assessment is done by the surveyor or independent surveyor assigned by the insurance company to confirm the damage figure.
Apart from this, there is also a risk that the academic activities of college students will come to a standstill until the physical infrastructure is rebuilt.
Although the college management will be able to conduct classes partially from the nearby buildings until the physical infrastructure is built, it may take at least three months for academic activities to return to full rhythm.
