Kathmandu. The government is going to tighten the insurance for mountaineering. The bill to amend and integrate the existing laws related to tourism is going to tighten the insurance on mountaineering.
The bill has now been registered in the National Assembly for discussion. The bill will become legal once it is passed by both houses.
The bill, which is being brought to replace the existing Tourism Act, 2035, provides that the trekking agency managing mountaineering must insure the members of the mountaineering team, liaison officer, sardar, guide and assistance from the licensed insurance company as per the prevailing law. Insurance should be done before the start of mountaineering related work.
The bill provides for personal accident insurance, health treatment insurance, search and rescue insurance and dead body management insurance from the insurance company of all those related to the mountaineering team.
The bill provides for a one-time insurance of up to three months for mountaineering teams who climb more than one mountain in a season, sardars, guides or helpers accompanying such mountaineering teams.
The Bill provides that if a person or any helper engaged in mountaineering work is employed without insuring, then if such person goes missing, accident or dies during that period, the trekking agency will have to pay the following compensation to him or her heir:

According to the bill, “accident” means an accidental or natural accident, health complications caused by snow or geographical height. The insurance amount and other provisions related to insurance will be fixed.
According to the provisions of the bill, if the trekking agency does not provide insurance, it will be considered a crime and a fine of up to Rs 500,000 will have to be paid.
Nepal Mountaineering Association has made it mandatory for mountaineers and guides to bring an insurance policy of Rs 3 million while applying for climbing permit.
