The plane with call sign TK726, which took off from Istanbul to Kathmandu, was landing on the runway at around 6:45 am today.

Flames and smoke could be seen from the tyres of the aircraft soon after the aircraft landed on the runway. It is suspected that the fire was caused by friction on the tyres due to a technical problem.

Fire brigade and rescue teams rushed to the scene as soon as the plane caught fire. The fire was immediately brought under control.

All passengers and crew on board have been safely evacuated through the emergency doors. No casualties have been reported so far.

Flights and landing operations at Tribhuvan International Airport were affected for some time following the incident. The aircraft is currently being removed from the runway and a technical test is underway.

The airport said it was investigating the extent of the damage and the cause of the fire.
