Kathmandu. Iran has developed a major plan for the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important sea routes. Iran’s parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Committee has proposed a plan to charge ships to and from Hormuz. This means that Iran is preparing to open a new toll plaza for ships to Hormuz.
Iran will accept payments in any currency. This is a direct challenge to the dollar.
According to Iranian state media, under Article 3 of the proposed strategic plan, Iran will be able to charge ships that use the services it provides. These include navigation, environmental, insurance and security services. You may also be charged for fuel and other services in specific circumstances.
According to Iranian lawmaker Hassan Ghashaghavi, the fee will be charged from ships of countries that are allowed to cross the Strait Hormuz. Payments can be made in Iranian rials or any other currency specified by Iran.
Things are a bit complicated here. According to the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (LAW), Iran cannot block or impede the passage of ships through Hormuz. Normally, it can’t even tolls the road to Iran. However, the convention does allow fees to be charged for certain services. Iran is preparing to take advantage of this provision to charge for services such as navigation and security.
According to analysts, Iran’s need for cash is increasing under the pressure of US economic sanctions. The value of the Iranian rial has also reached a record low.
However, regional countries are unlikely to easily accept this additional tariff. Experts say many countries can avoid paying Iran extra. This raises the risk of U.S. sanctions.
If implemented, the plan could have a direct impact on international ships passing through Hormuz. Regional tensions with Iran may also increase. –Agency
