Kathmandu. Recently, a suspicious cyberattack on supermarkets across Europe has damaged refrigerators and large freezers. Devices connected to the Internet and Wi-Fi include refrigerators, washing machines, and central heating systems.

When even ordinary electronic devices are not free from cyberattacks. This exposes the weaknesses of the entire industry. Devices connected to the internet are easy to control remotely, and hackers often take advantage of it. However, this does not mean that hackers can control every device. Home appliance brands constantly claim that their technology is safe.

Some devices have been victims of such attacks in the past. A study claims that a Samsung smart refrigerator was captured by hackers in 2015. However, there is no evidence that the cyberattack on supermarkets is directly related to home appliances.

Ciaran Martin, the former CEO of Britain’s National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), told the BBC: “Manufacturers need to do more to secure connected devices. We should expect big tech companies to provide us with more secure tools and products.” ’

He added, “Ordinary consumers should keep their devices up to date. Two-factor authentication should be enabled as much as possible. It only takes a few seconds to update. ’

Under UK law, from April 2024, manufacturers of home smart devices will be required to adhere to minimum cybersecurity standards, including the requirements for passwords and security updates. The NCSC said it was working with international partners and industries to understand supermarket incidents. But it is unaware of any impact in the UK.

Still, UK cybersecurity researchers have identified more than 800 refrigeration and building-control interfaces, or smart automation systems. These are linked to UK retailers. These can be controlled via the external internet. This means they are not hackable, but they may be vulnerable to hackers exploiting weak passwords or software vulnerabilities.

Cars, power plants and water supplies are also under investigation. However, following previous attacks on supermarkets, the government had already asked major food retailers to strengthen their cybersecurity.

Helen Dickinson, chief executive of the British Retail Consortium, told BBC News: “These cyber incidents are a major concern for retailers. Businesses are working with the NCSC to share information and strengthen their security. ’

However, this is not the first time. Hacking has affected the food supply in the past. Which has raised concerns.

In May 2025, hackers targeted British supermarket M&S and retail company Co-op. Retailers faced difficulties in delivering fresh goods. After the cyber attack, customers complained that goods were not available in stores throughout the day.

Tom Hagel, a researcher at cybersecurity firm SentinelOne, told BBC News that food retailers should be more vigilant about cybersecurity. “Retailers need to address the question of who is responsible for the security of these devices,” he said. “It’s not just about who does the repairs.” Internet connectivity can make everyday technology more accessible, but security is also important. Hacker attacks don’t just affect computers. Changing the same setting can damage freezers. ’

Internet or Wi-Fi technology is used not only in homes but also outdoors. This technology is used to remotely control industrial machinery and vehicles.

Cybersecurity expert Ken Monroe spoke about the 2015 demonstration. In which researchers hacked the Jeep remotely through an internet-connected entertainment system. The vehicle’s security was later improved. “Fortunately, the auto industry is paying attention and fixing the problem,” Munro said.

Mobile connections are also widely used to monitor power plants and water plants. This allows engineers to control systems remotely. “Utility companies in the UK are generally good at securing these connections,” Munro said. “Safety standards vary around the world.” – From the BBC
