Kathmandu. Germany is trying to create solar-like energy on Earth. To achieve this, scientists and private companies are working on nuclear fusion.
Fusion involves fusing light atoms together and releasing a huge amount of energy. The German company, Proxima Fusion, is working with the Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics on stellator technology. The company will first build a machine called Alpha. Then it plans to build a fusion power plant called Stellaris.
Fusion is the process that produces energy in the sun. The high temperature and pressure of the sun fuses hydrogen atoms together, releasing energy. Scientists are trying to repeat this process on Earth, but this work is not easy.
Fusion requires heating plasma to millions of degrees. The biggest challenge is to control such heat inside the machine. Germany is using stellator technology for this purpose. A very strong magnetic field has been created. This magnetic field keeps the hot plasma away from the wall of the machine.
A stellator is a special type of fusion machine. It uses very powerful magnetic coils. Together, these coils create a magnetic field. This helps to keep the hot plasma inside the center of the machine. For fusion, the temperature of the plasma needs to reach several hundred million degrees Celsius.
Germany’s Wendelstein 7-X machine is working on this technology. In 2025, the temperature of the plasma in this machine reached about 30 million degrees Celsius. In one experiment, the plasma was maintained for 43 seconds. – Agency
