Kathmandu. US President Donald Trump on Friday signed a bill to impose sanctions on Russia.

Under the new law, the US president has the power to impose tariffs of up to 100% on the five largest buyers of oil and natural gas from Russia. This includes Russia’s major energy buyers, India and China.

However, the bill does not automatically impose 100% tariffs on India or China. Instead, it gives the US president the authority to do so. The bill has already been passed by the US Congress.

The official name of the bill is the Lindsey O. Graham Sanctions Act of 2026 on Russia and Iran. It is named after the late Republican Senator Lindsey Graham.

Graham, who died on July 11, was a supporter of Ukraine and advocated for tougher sanctions on Russia. The 48-page bill includes exemptions for countries that import less than 15% of their natural gas needs from Russia and work to reduce their dependence on Russia.

In addition, the bill includes sanctions against Russian President Vladimir Putin, senior Russian government officials, banks and other financial institutions. Sanctions have also been imposed on Russian ships used to evade existing sanctions.
