Germany, Poland and the Czech Republic also set new records. This intense heat wave continues to surge towards Eastern Europe.

In an Instagram post, WHO chief Tedros Ghebreyesus said there had been at least 1,300 deaths linked to extreme temperatures in Europe since June 21. ’

The physical stress associated with heat is often referred to as the ‘silent killer’. European homes, offices and schools were not prepared for such temperatures. Europe is the fastest-warming continent on Earth, with temperatures rising twice as much as the global average, Tedros warned. ’

On Sunday morning, the French Health Ministry announced that the country had reported nearly 1,000 more deaths than expected since Wednesday. Most of the victims were 65 years of age and older. The number of deaths at home has increased by 40 percent.
