‘Mandatory ban on vehicular movement’ on highways for disaster mitigation

Kathmandu. The Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (DRRRMA) has stated that it has imposed a ‘mandatory ban’ on the movement of vehicles on the highways in areas where medium to very heavy rainfall is predicted.

At a virtual meeting organised by the NRA today, Secretary at Home Ministry Rameshwor Dangal shared that the government has decided to impose ‘mandatory restriction’ on the movement of vehicles on some highways and hold discussions for the initiatives to be taken from the state side for the disaster management.

Moderate to very heavy rainfall has been predicted from Koshi to Lumbini Province from October 3 to October 2.

Secretary Dangal said that the non-government sector has a big role to play in reducing the loss of life and property due to disasters in the time of political liquidity and uncertainty, urging the stakeholders to identify their role in the disaster situation and contribute.

Chiefs and officials of various national and international organizations’ federations and networks and experts briefed about the preparedness, rescue and relief capacity they have been carrying out by their respective organisations, suggesting that brief and clear information should be disseminated as per the situation of weather and rivers.

Chief Executive Officer of NRA Dinesh Bhatta said that they have signed agreements with organizations related to helicopter, drone, boat and private sector keeping in mind the disaster.

Bhatta expressed his commitment to disseminate the updated information related to forecasting to the community as soon as possible and understandably and urged the non-government sector to activate all networks for this.

Senior meteorologist at the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology Binod Parajuli and meteorologist Binu Maharjan said there is a possibility of heavy rainfall in some parts of Koshi, Madhesh, Bagmati, Gandaki and Lumbini provinces on October 1 and extremely heavy rainfall in some places of Koshi, Madhesh, Bagmati and Gandaki provinces on October 1.
