Kathmandu. Senior Vice-President of Independent Power Producers’ Association Nepal (IPPAN) Mohan Kumar Dangi has urged the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) not to show bravery by harassing the private sector.
Dangi made the request while addressing a programme organised on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of nea on Sunday. “At a time when NEA and IPPAN have got a golden opportunity to create history by contributing to take the country on the path of prosperity, nea, as the sole power buyer and distributor, should be engaged in increasing consumption, increasing exports and increasing production,” dangi said. Dangi said the time has come for all political parties to understand that these 6.5 million investors are not only investors but also voters while changing any policy rules of the energy sector and changing the policy rules of the stock market. “As Nepalis, the first objective of all of us should be in the interest of Nepal,” he said, adding that the time should be spent on increasing the consumption within the country, constructing transmission lines, increasing electricity generation and increasing exports without spending time to show bravery by not cooperating with each other. ’
Contributions of electricity authority and private sector equal
Dangi further said that Nepal has become a net power exporting country since the last fiscal year and the contribution of NEA in providing access to electricity to 734 local levels i.e. 97.5 percent of the 753 local levels is not less than that from any angle. “The contribution of the private sector has been significant whether it is to become a net exporting country by increasing it from 254 MW to 3,600 MW now or to provide access to electricity to 734 local levels in the last 25 years after the finalization of power purchase and sale rate (PPA) in 2055 BS,” he said.
15,000 MW of exports generating $700 billion annually
Dangi said that if the government of Nepal could export 15,000 MW by generating 28,500 MW as per the target set by the Government of Nepal, it would bring rs 500-700 billion annually to the country and the current economy would increase by almost four times if the current 400 kW per capita electricity consumption could be increased to 13,500 kW annually. Stating that investment in hydropower was not unproductive, he expressed the belief that the government would earn rs 30 million per MW annually after generating electricity and if 2,500 MW electricity could be generated annually for the next 10 years, about Rs 4.5 trillion could be earned and the target set by the Government of Nepal could be fulfilled with the same amount.
Structures of 3500 MW export ready
Dangi said that 3500 MW of electricity can be exported from the existing transmission structures alone. “At present, Nepal can export electricity generated from Dhalkebar-Muzaffarpur 400 KVA to 1000 MW, 500 MW from five 132 KVA transmission lines (Kushha-Kataiya, Raxaul-Parwanipur, Gandak-Ramnagar, Tanakpur-Mahendranagar and Sandeta-Mainhiya) and about 2,000 MW from Arun III transmission line,” he said. I request the private sector to be involved in the construction of transmission lines in the bottlenecks of transmission lines in different parts of the country and are ready to contribute more. ’
Senior Vice-President Dangi handed over the license to Energy Minister Khadka for the construction of power trade and transmission line to the private sector for a permanent solution to the problems related to the Electricity Authority and other problems in the energy sector of Nepal.
