Kathmandu. US President Donald Trump’s desire to annex Greenland is growing. He had earlier threatened to merge it. But when that didn’t work, he came up with a new plan.

According to a Reuters report, Trump has discussed the possibility of distributing cash directly to the people of Greenland in order to separate from Denmark. Trump’s meeting with his aides and senior White House officials on Greenland recently said that since Denmark is unable to manage it, Greenland should be controlled by the United States.

Trump’s rhetoric, however, infuriated European leaders, including Greenland and Denmark. Several European leaders issued a joint statement after Trump’s remarks, saying Greenland belongs to its people and that only Greenland and Denmark have the right to make any decisions about Greenland and Denmark.

What is Trump going to do?

According to a Reuters report, US officials have discussed a lump sum payment to persuade the people of Greenland to break away from Denmark and form more alliances with the United States. Two sources familiar with the matter told Reuters that during the discussions, cash payments in Denmark ranged from $10,000 to $100,000 per person. However, no final proposal has been finalized yet.

These are only preliminary discussions and the terms and methods of payment have not yet been finalized. However, concrete proposals have been put forward to distribute direct cash to Greenland’s 57,000 residents.

Trump says the U.S. should have full ownership of Greenland,

In an interview with The New York Times on Thursday, Trump said the US should get full ownership of Greenland instead of relying on existing treaties. “I don’t need international law and they can’t diminish my power,” he said. ’

Trump made it clear that Greenland should be fully owned. No rent or treaty of any kind serves his purpose.

The U.S. already has a 1951 military agreement. It gives Greenland broad authority to establish military facilities. For which his consent is required.

Greenland rejects Trump’s plan

Greenland openly rejects the idea of cash payments. Greenland’s prime minister, Jeanz-Friedrich Nielsen, said the future of the region cannot be decided by foreign countries.

Responding to Trump’s repeated calls for Greenland’s annexation, Nielsen said: “Enough is enough. There is no longer any idea about the merger. ’

Earlier, European leaders had opposed the US plan to annex Greenland. Denmark and the United States are both NATO members. European leaders said it would make NATO meaningless.

Denmark and Greenland also joined in persuading Trump

On Thursday, representatives of Denmark and Greenland met with White House officials in an effort to persuade Trump. Danish Ambassador to the United States Jesper Moeller Sorensen and Greenland’s representative Jakob Esbostesen met with White House National Security Council officials.

Representatives of both countries have held a series of meetings with US lawmakers this week to persuade Trump to back down from his threats. Meanwhile, it has also been reported that Foreign Secretary Marco Rubio may meet with Danish officials next week.

The White House has not ruled out the possibility of military intervention in Greenland. White House Press Secretary Carolyn Levitt said the use of US military is “always an option” for the US president while negotiations continue. –Agency
