Kathmandu. Nepal Medical Association (NMA) has announced a strike in protest against the attack on doctors at Birgunj Narayani Sub-Regional Hospital on Wednesday.
The NMA has decided to halt health services at hospitals across the country, saying the government has not shown any interest in taking action against the culprits despite the death of a patient in course of treatment at Narayani Hospital.
Raj Kumar Patel, a resident of Birgunj Metropolitan City-25, died while undergoing treatment at the hospital on Saturday. The relatives of the deceased have accused Dr. Madhav Kumar of negligence in his treatment. Pramod Ram and other health workers were attacked.
An emergency meeting held at the NRNA’s central office on Tuesday decided to shut down all services except emergency at hospitals, medical colleges and health institutions across the country on Wednesday.
The doctors have protested saying that the Home Ministry has not shown any interest in arresting the culprits even after four days of the incident. “It is a matter of shame that the Chief District Officer (CDO) and the police chief of Parsa district misbehaved with the doctors who went to seek justice instead of taking action against the culprits,” the statement said.
Doctors and health workers from all over the Kathmandu Valley will assemble at Maitighar Mandala at 10:00 am tomorrow to protest. Likewise, doctors from outside the Kathmandu Valley will submit a memorandum to the concerned District Administration Office and stage a sit-in at the health institutions where they work.
