Kathmandu. The Southeast Asian country of Singapore has introduced a law to flog those found guilty of fraud in a bid to curb online fraud.
With 60 per cent of the crimes registered in a year being online fraud, the government is continuing with the British colonial rule punishment system.
Earlier this week, Singapore’s parliament amended criminal law to introduce the punishment of flogging as a punishment for fraudsters. In the first half of this year alone, tens of thousands of fraud cases were reported, resulting in a fraud of about $385 million.
“Fraudsters will be punished with a minimum of six blows with the stick,” Sim An, senior minister of state for foreign affairs and home affairs, said in a statement. “
According to local media, the punishment could be up to 24 blows.
