Kathmandu. Two men have been arrested in connection with the theft of the Louvre museum in Paris.
On October 19, one of the most ingenious and fast-paced museum robberies in history took place. The thieves, disguised as construction workers, carried out a meticulously planned robbery in broad daylight. They stole eight pieces of French Crown jewelry worth about 88 million euros (about $102 million) from the Galerie d’Apolle.
After the incident, the Paris public prosecutor’s office mobilized a task force of about 100 investigators. Using DNA evidence, fingerprints and security footage, police began searching for the thieves.
On October 25, two people were arrested in connection with the theft. One was taken into police custody at Charles de Gaulle airport while trying to fly to Algeria, while the other was detained in the suburb of Seine-Saint-Denis, north of Paris.
Both are in their 30s and already know law enforcement. It is believed that a four-member team was involved in the theft. Interpol has stepped up international support by including stolen jewelry in its database of stolen artefacts.
Paris police said they were searching for others involved in the theft.
