Kathmandu. Kathmandu: The government has clarified that national identity cards are not mandatory for senior and disabled citizens.

The government has clarified that national identity cards are not mandatory for senior and disabled citizens to enjoy government services. Issuing a press release on Monday, the Department of National Identity Registration under the Ministry of Home Affairs has directed the service providers concerned not to deprive themselves of government services as the national identity card is not mandatory in the case of those who are unable to take care of themselves, cannot walk, disabled, helpless or senior citizens above 90 years of age.

The Department has said that even if they do not have a national identity card, they will not be hindered in getting government services.

National Identity Card was made mandatory for social security related, health insurance, personal income tax registration related to revenue, driver’s license, company registration and renewal, banking and financial services, telephone and SIM card, social security fund and purchase of real estate. “However, national identity card or national identity card number is not mandatory for such categories of citizens to avail these facilities,” department director Mukesh Kumar Keshari said in a statement.
