Kathmandu. The Economic Media Society Nepal (EMSON) has drawn its attention to the recent incidents of removal and prohibition of news published in the media and issuance of arrest warrants against journalists.
In a press release issued today, EMSON said it has drawn attention to such incidents. “In the last few days, the court has been issuing orders to remove the content published in the media and not to publish any further material, this incident has drawn our attention,” the statement said, adding, “It is well known that full press freedom has been guaranteed in the preamble of the Constitution of Nepal 2072.” Not only this, the issue of issuing arrest warrants to media persons for publishing and broadcasting media materials, the removal and publication of news has raised questions about press freedom in Nepal. ’
Imsan believes that the removal of news by Bijmandu and Nepal Khabar and the ban on the publication of more news and the issuance of arrest warrants to journalist Dil Bhushan Pathak is also raising the question of whether the freedom of the press is being curbed. “The Press Council Nepal has the constitutional and legal right to make a preliminary resolution and assessment of any dissent or dispute over the news content published or circulated in any media,” it said. However, since the Press Council has the right to initially resolve the situation in which press freedom and freedom of expression as mentioned in the Preamble of the Constitution of Nepal and dissatisfaction with the news published in the media, we are confident that the honorable court has been protecting the freedom of the press in the past and will move forward in accordance with the spirit of the constitution and law in the coming days. ’
EMSON has been fully committed to protecting press freedom, professional freedom of media operators, journalists and the institutional dignity of Press Council Nepal. “We also urge all media houses and journalists to fully abide by the journalist code of conduct in line with the spirit of free and fair journalism,” the statement said.
