Kathmandu. The United States has announced a new green card policy. Under this policy, most immigrants seeking green cards will have to leave the United States and apply through the U.S. Embassy or Consulate in their home country.
US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) said on Friday that those seeking a change of status should do so through consular processing outside the country except under certain circumstances. The move is part of the Trump administration’s efforts to curb illegal immigration. It closes a loophole that would allow visa holders and visitors to apply for green cards while in the United States.
Critics of the policy say the long-standing system allowed families to live together during the lengthy application process. “The new system could create hardship for millions of migrants, they say, making it uncertain whether they will be able to leave the country and return to the United States in the hope of getting a green card.” ’
A green card provides permanent residency in the U.S. This card gives a person the same facilities and rights as American citizens.
Green card holders are not given the right to vote. But they have equal opportunities to travel and work anywhere in the United States. Obtaining this card paves the way for permanent U.S. citizenship.
According to USCIS, this is known as a permanent resident card. This card is issued for a period of 10 years. It can then be continuously renewed. The U.S. issues this card to foreign nationals on a number of grounds. –Agency
