Kathmandu. Life insurance companies around the world are facing increasing pressure on their balance sheets as macroeconomic risks continue to alter the investment climate and liability profiles.

This is according to the ‘Global Insurance Market’ report released by the International Association of Insurance Supervisors in mid-year 2026. Based on interim results from the 2026 Global Monitoring Exercise, the report shows that while the major insurance sector started this year with stable solvency, liquidity and profitability, life companies are particularly vulnerable. Their long-term liability makes asset-liability matching highly sensitive to changes in interest rates, credit conditions, and inflation.

Rising interest rates and broader credit spreads can sharply reduce the market value of fixed-income holdings. Which is the backbone of most life portfolios. Insurance companies holding large amounts of undervalued sovereign or corporate debt, commercial real estate, infrastructure finance or structured credit are experiencing the greatest valuation impacts.

According to the report, liquidity risks are also increasing. “When markets fluctuate, or insurers abandon higher-rate insurance contracts, life insurers may need to sell assets at a lower price or suddenly meet demand for cash,” the report said. That puts more pressure on companies that need refinancing or face a foreign exchange mismatch. ’

Observers warn that these pressures require more than regular monitoring. Insurance companies are already responding with asset redistribution, rapid scenario analysis and liquidity stress testing. “Escalating sovereign debt levels, persistent inflation and geopolitical uncertainty mean that balance sheet strength cannot be taken lightly,” the report said.

Therefore, the International Association of Insurance Supervisors has identified the impact of aggregate risk on the balance sheets of life insurance companies as one of its three main themes for in-depth scrutiny in 2026.

While higher yields may ultimately support reinvestment income and improve long-term profitability, the potential for short-term mark-to-market effects and higher defaults creates a delicate balancing act. The report stresses that effective risk management, careful diversification, and adaptable business models will determine how well life insurance companies perform in the coming months. –Agency
