Kathmandu. Two leaders of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) have resigned from their posts following the crisis caused by the Zenji agitation in the country. Rastriya Samajbadi Party (RSP) leaders Asim Shah and Toshima Karki have resigned from the post of House of Representatives.
“I inform you that I have tendered my resignation from the post of Member of Parliament with immediate effect from today,” Shah wrote on his Facebook page. ’
“The government’s suppression of the Jenji agitation in recent days, inhumane steps such as firing on peaceful demonstrations, and direct interference in civil rights are against my conscience and accountability towards the people,” Shah said. “I have repeatedly spoken the voice of the youth in the parliament and warned that there could be street uprisings if the sentiments of the youth were not addressed.
According to Shah, the lives of children are more important than the security of Parliament House. “The crime of murder has been committed by the government to protect the building,” he said, adding, “I have taken this decision with the firm belief that to remain silent in parliament or to silently support such wrong policies would be a great betrayal to my generation, voters and the future of my country.” ’
“Lawmakers are not just a post for themselves but a means to represent the voice of the people,” Shah said. “But when that voice was suppressed and the government broke its commitment to its citizens, it was no longer possible for me to sit in such a parliament. I am now committed to taking to the streets and fighting for the Genji generation, our citizens and the truth. ’
On the other hand, Karki has also announced to step down from the post of lawmaker. “I may submit the letter officially, but from 11:55 am today, I announce that I will step down from the responsibility of the parliament and will not be a member of parliament for the 2079 elections,” Karki wrote in her Facebook status.
Both leaders have expressed solidarity with the Genji movement.
