Kathmandu. The International Labour Day is being celebrated today. Labor Day is celebrated across the world to commemorate the labor movement that started in Chicago in 1886 with the slogan ‘Eight hours of work, eight hours of entertainment and eight hours of rest’. With this, government offices, banks, insurance companies and stock markets will remain closed today.
During this movement, a bomb exploded in Chicago’s Hay Market. It is not clear who carried out the bomb blast, but the police cracked down heavily on the protesting workers. Seven labourers were killed in police firing. The labor movement eventually succeeded.
In 1889, a meeting of the world’s labor organizations and labor leaders held in Paris, France, decided to celebrate World Labor Day all over the world. Since then, Labor Day has been celebrated every year on May 1 in the English month since 1890.
Workers around the world celebrate this day as a festival and celebrate it by organizing various programs to put pressure on the government and employers to ensure their rights.
Even in Nepal, labor organizations have celebrated this day by organizing various programs. This day is being celebrated in Nepal in 2007 BS along with the labor movement. With the political change of 2046 BS, a public holiday was started in Nepal on this day.
The provision of labor rights is also included in the Constitution of Nepal. The government has implemented the Labour Act, 2074 BS and contribution-based social security programme to implement the provision.
Labor Day, which is the festival of the workers who sell their blood, sweat and labor and earn hard earned hard, is considered to be a symbol of unity, bravery and struggle of all the workers by collectively strengthening the rights, rights and freedoms of the workers. On May Day, the trade union movement organized by the capitalist class against the practice of employing workers 24 hours a day like machines and treating them inhumanly by paying very low wages is specially discussed.
