Kathmandu. The Insurance Authority of Nepal (NIA) has directed the government to recommend action against insurance agents spreading false, misleading and exaggerated publicity related to insurance on social media and other media.

The authority issued the directive after the Insurance Khabar continuously disseminated news about some insurance agents using terms like “Insurance Advisor” to distribute misleading information to the public.

Agents continue to spread misinformation, still spreading false propaganda materials on social media

According to the circular issued by the authority on Monday, although a circular has already been issued on September 22 to control and monitor misleading publicity, it has been noted that the attention of the newspapers has been drawn by some insurance agents on social networks that they are still spreading false and misleading publicity of similar nature.

The Authority has asked all insurance companies to strictly monitor such publicity materials by their agents. In addition, if it is found that regulatory action is required to be taken including cancellation of the license of the agents involved in misleading information or fraudulent activities, it should write to the Authority with a recommendation.
