Kathmandu. The United States has decided to impose new tariffs on about 60 of its trading partners. It claims that these countries have not done enough to stop forced labor.
The tariffs, ranging from 10 to 12.5 percent, will apply to major U.S. trading partners, including India, the United Kingdom, China, the European Union, Canada and Japan. These tariffs will come into effect from Friday. The temporary 10% tariff on foreign goods, which was imposed earlier this year, is coming to an end.
It is the latest major step in a trade war that erupted after Donald Trump’s re-election last year. Earlier this year, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that many of the tariffs imposed by countries around the world using emergency powers were not legally permissible.
Since then, President Trump has taken other legal avenues to enforce his key trade policy. Last month, the White House proposed for the first time that a tariff would be imposed between 10 and 12.5 percent on goods coming into the United States from countries accused of not doing enough to curb forced labor. –Agency
