According to a recent analysis by global reinsurance broker Aon, the wildfires, which are still raging, are expected to cause billions of dollars worth of damage to insured property. This will have a direct impact on property in the fire-affected areas as well as remote areas affected by the heavy smoke in the United States.
The fires have reduced dense forests across Canada to ashes. Houses and infrastructure have been destroyed. Thousands of people have been rendered homeless.
Property and casualty (P&C) insurance companies in Canada are facing a significant number of insurance claims for damaged buildings, lost goods, and business interruptions. Claims related to smoke add another layer of complexity. The fires are raising costs and complicating risk assessments for insurance companies on both sides of the Canada-U.S. border.
Reinsurance pricing for wildfire coverage in Canada reflects these challenges. By 2026, there has been a significant decline in the global property catastrophe rate in renewables. The rate-online index has fallen by about 16 percent. In Canada, there has been little or no slowdown in programs affected by the bushfires.
The increasing frequency of damage activity and climate-induced damage has alarmed reinsurance companies. Advanced disaster models, which incorporate climate projections, have inflated projected deficits, especially for provinces such as British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan.
