Kathmandu. Bagmati Provincial University (PU) has launched Master’s of Risk and Insurance Management (MRIM) course in Nepal.
A discussion program was held in Kathmandu today to inform about this educational program. The purpose of the discussion program was to appeal for collaboration with various bodies including the insurance sector to advance MRIM.
MRIM is a 4-semester program. This program is designed to develop highly skilled professionals in risk management, insurance, reinsurance, actuarial foundation, data analysis and regulatory frameworks. This academic program integrates theory with practical exposure through practical curricula, industrial and educational visits, 6-month internship and thesis.
The two-year course consists of one and a half years of study, while for the remaining 6 months, students have to do internships in companies and prepare a thesis. MRIM has a total credit score of 63. The first, second and third semester will have 18 credit scores each, while the fourth semester will have 3 credit scores for internship and 6 credit scores for thesis.
In the third semester, students will have to choose one of the specialization areas of life insurance, non-life life insurance, social insurance, reinsurance, pension fund and wealth management, risk management.

Eligibility criteria
Educational Requirement: Bachelor’s degree from a recognized university with minimum CGPA 2.0 (semester system) or minimum 45% (annual system). Candidates who do not have at least 2 years of professional experience in banking, finance, insurance or related services may apply to study in this academic program.
On the occasion, Dean of Bagmati Province University, Dr Gangaram Bishwakarma, shed light on the need and importance of this educational programme in the context of Nepal. “Nepal’s insurance sector is small but strong in South Asia,” he said, adding, “However, the risk to the insurance sector is increasing due to climate change, cyber threats, health crisis, financial upheavals.” Therefore, this educational program has been prepared keeping in mind the risk management aspect. ’
According to Dean Bishwakarma, this educational program has been prepared after discussing with the experts of the insurance sector. He said that this would produce skilled manpower in the field of risk management in Nepal.
On the occasion, professor Rabindra Ghimire of Pokhara University said that no university had run such programmes in the insurance sector as it was a long history. “Bagmati Provincial University is going to bring this program into operation. ’
Ghimire said that this type of educational program would produce skilled and leadership human resources in Nepal. “There are very few human resources in the existing insurance companies,” he said, adding, “They understand the various indicators of insurance only after they start working in the insurance companies.” ’
He said that in this educational program, students will be able to study world-class curriculum. “Experts not only from Nepal but also from America, Europe and India will teach the programme,” he said, adding that project-based learning will be imparted in this program. ’
Ghimire said that insurance companies should now collaborate with Bagmati University to provide information about various data and products to the students studying in this educational program. He also appealed to the regulators to help with the data and experience.
The program was attended by representatives from the insurance and education sectors.
