Kathmandu. The insurance policy introduced by Nepal Insurance Authority (NIA) for the risk of people living around the forest area has ensured risk cover up to Rs 1.85 million from Rs 1,500.

The NEA has issued insurance policies with the facility of Rs 1 million for accident expenses, Rs 500,000 for damage to house and physical infrastructure, Rs 100,000 for livestock damage and Rs 50,000 for loss of crops to the people who are at risk of wildlife attack.

As per the policy, the accident cover will be Rs. 10 lakhs, Rs. 10 lakhs for total disability and Rs. 5 lakhs for temporary total disability. In addition, the insurance company will provide up to Rs 100,000 for medical treatment and Rs 20,000 for minor injuries.

To receive compensation for temporary total disability, the insured must have been unable to earn income for at least 183 days in connection with a wildlife attack.

It will take some time for the insurer to bring this insurance policy issued by the authority into sale. After the insurer comes into practice, interested people can contact the nearest non-life insurer or micro life insurer’s office to purchase the policy.

According to the annual report of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA), 62 people have lost their lives due to wildlife attacks in the first six months of the current fiscal year. Koshi Province had the highest number of wildlife attacks while Bagmati Province had the highest number of deaths at 15.
