Opportunities for women in non-life insurance at higher levels

Kathmandu. Non-life insurers are ahead of life insurers in terms of participation of women employees in the higher managerial level.

Women constitute 25 per cent of the manpower in the non-life insurers who file complaints directly with the CHIEF executive officer at the top managerial level. Only 7 percent of the total manpower at this level in life insurance is women.

Non-life insurers are more generous than life when it comes to providing opportunities to women at higher managerial levels. Working as an employee of a non-life insurer rather than a life insurer makes it possible for women to get faster and more opportunities for professional development.

According to an article titled ‘Insurance through Gender Lens: Significance, Convenience and the Way Forward’ written by Deputy Director Pushpa Kunwar in the 57th anniversary special issue of Nepal Insurance Authority, life insurers are more comfortable than non-life in terms of women’s participation in the board of directors. About 25 per cent of life insurers are women. Only 18 per cent of the board members of the non-life insurer are women.

From reinsurance expert to executive officer

In Nepal, there are women in the post of Chief Executive, Deputy CHIEF Executive Officer and General Manager of reinsurer and non-life insurer. It is also the non-life insurance company that has given an opportunity to women for the post of CEO for the first time.

Upasana Poudel was appointed as the first woman CHIEF executive officer of the then United Insurance. She is currently the Chief Executive of Himalayan Reinsurance. Anju Shrestha is serving as the CHIEF Executive Officer of Himalayan Everest Insurance.

Sabita Maskey of Shikhar Insurance and Rina Rijal of United Ajod Insurance are the deputy CHIEF executive officers.

She is also a reinsurance expert. Rama Dahal has taken over as the Head of Reinsurance Broker Company Nepal.

At the managerial level, 22 percent of the total manpower employed in life insurance is women. Women make up 18 per cent of the population.

In terms of women’s participation in the total manpower, life insurance has slightly more participation than non-life insurers. Of the total workforce, only 37 per cent are women while 39 per cent are women.

According to the ‘Insurance Reflection’ data paper published by the Nepal Insurance Authority, 2081. A total of 6,055 people are working in the life insurance company as of Mid-July 2018. On an average, there are 2,361 women manpower. Similarly, a total of 6,036 people are working in the non-life insurance company. Based on the percentage of participation, it can be estimated that there are about 2,233 women manpower.
