Night transport shut down in 23 districts citing risk of floods and landslides

The second meeting of the Monsoon Response Command Post has directed the movement of vehicles at night in 23 different districts in view of the possibility of heavy rain. The meeting directed the vehicular movement as per the necessity by adopting precautionary measures based on the weather forecast issued by the Meteorological Forecasting Division of the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology.

According to Meteorological Forecasting Division, there are chances of extremely heavy rainfall at one or two places of the hilly and terai regions of Koshi, Gandaki, Lumbini and Sudurpaschim provinces on July 18 and 19.

According to Meteorological Forecasting Division, there are chances of heavy to very heavy rainfall at one or two places of the Tarai region of Koshi, Bagmati, Lumbini and Sudurpaschim provinces and at one or two places of the Tarai region of Madhesh, Bagmati and Gandaki provinces. The Division has listed Panchthar, Ilam, Jhapa, Sankhuwasabha, Tehrathum, Bhojpur, Khotang and Dhankuta districts at high risk of disaster. Similarly, Sindhuli, Lalitpur, Kavre, Sindhupalchowk, Nuwakot, Chitwan and Dhading within the Bagmati Province have been included in the list of those that need to be responded. Similarly, Gorkha, Lamjung, Kaski, Tanahun, Parbat, Baglung, Myagdi and Syangja within Gandaki Province have been included in the red color list.

Issuing a press release after the meeting, the Command Post has directed the district security committee and local levels to adopt high alertness and ban the vehicular movement during the night in the areas prone to sudden risk of flood, landslide, erosion, mudslide and inundation in urban and Tarai areas.

According to the command post, dozers, excavators and loaders have been kept on standby on the risky highways and roads. The meeting also urged the District Security Committee to relocate the people living in vulnerable areas and their families to safer places as per the need before the disaster strikes.
