Kathmandu. North America’s Allianz Life Insurance Company has confirmed that hackers have unauthorized access to the personal data of most of its 1.4 million customers.
Minneapolis-based Allianz Life, a munich subsidiary of Germany-based Allianz SE, reported the data breach on July 16. A malicious hacker stole data through access to a third-party, cloud-based system used by the company.
“The hacker was successful in obtaining personally identifiable data related to most of Allianz Life’s customers, financial professionals, and Allianz Life employees using social engineering technology,” Allianz Life said in a statement. “We took immediate action to control and mitigate the problem and informed the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
The company claims that the data theft took place through the use of a third-party platform, not on its own systems.
The agency’s website made a public announcement that the company detected the breach the day after the incident took place, and that it would provide 24 months of identity theft protection and credit monitoring to those affected.
