Kathmandu. Banks and other government institutions were also closed while people were celebrating the Christmas holiday. Some of the thieves took advantage of this peaceful environment and easily escaped with large sums of money from the bank.

According to a BBC report, a group of thieves dug a tunnel in a highly secure German bank and broke into 3,000 lockers and took $ 35 million (about Rs 5.4 billion). Police said thieves used a drill to break into lockers at the Sparkasse savings bank in the western German city of Gelsenkirchen. They made their way inside the bank and then took out the money from the locker and fled.

A police spokesman compared the theft to the Hollywood film ‘Ocean Eleven’. “It was done very professionally,” a police spokesman told the AFP news agency. Along with the money, valuables were also stolen. ’

During the robbery, the thieves broke into more than 3,000 lockers filled with cash, gold and jewelry. Gelsenkirchen police said they were alerted about the theft after the fire alarm went off on Monday morning. The alarm detected a tunnel leading to an underground locker room. Police and firefighters then searched the building where the bank was located.

According to a report in DW, the thieves had drilled a hole in the building’s parking garage to gain access to the bank’s underground locker room. This tunnel led the thieves straight to the locker room. After the robbery, the thieves took the same route and fled with valuables and cash.

After this incident, a crowd of customers has gathered outside the bank. Many of the bank’s customers were of Turkish origin. They kept gold or gold ornaments in a safe-deposit box in the locker room. Their safe deposit is insured, but the value of the items inside is much higher than the insurance amount. Now the insurance companies are preparing to evaluate the loss suffered by the customer.

Affected customers are asked to contact Sparkase Bank. The bank has also issued a helpline number. A large crowd of customers had gathered outside the bank on Tuesday. Therefore, a large number of police personnel were deployed for security purposes.
