Kathmandu. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has announced a crackdown on birth tourism, making it clear that US citizenship is not for sale. The State Department has revoked the visas of more than 600 people involved in the network within a month. The State Department, the Department of Homeland Security and other agencies have jointly formed the Birth Tourism Prevention Task Force.

This action is being taken to eliminate visa fraud, fake documents and birth tourism. Rubio’s comments sparked a debate on social media about Trump’s gold card program.

Marco Rubio wrote on Platform X, “Networks that provide citizenship to children through fake documents and visa training to foreign nationals are profiting.” The State Department’s task force said it was conducting a thorough investigation into the activities and travel history of the visa holders. This network will be completely dismantled to protect the integrity of U.S. citizenship. ’

Trump’s ‘Gold Card’

A “community note” was added to X in response to Rubio’s claim that citizenship is not for sale, citing the Trump administration’s “gold card” program. According to the bill, foreign nationals who contribute between $1 million and $2 million are offered a path to U.S. residency and citizenship. However, the program does not directly sell citizenship. Instead, it provides a legal path to permanent residency and citizenship.

What is Birth Tourism?

Under the Trump administration’s definition, birth tourism is defined as travel to the United States on a nonimmigrant visa solely for the purpose of having a child. The action was taken under an executive order issued on August 6.

The 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, ratified in 1868, grants citizenship to all those born in the United States. –Agency
