Kathmandu. France has taken a big step to protect the digital security of minors. France’s National Assembly on Monday approved a law banning children under the age of 15 from using social media.

The ban has been imposed in response to online bullying, violence and mental health threats, the French government said. The new law bans children under the age of 15 from using social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and Snapchat. The new law also bans social networking features that provide online services to children.

This technique is said to protect minors from digital harm. French President Emmanuel Macron has said in the past that social media is responsible for the rise in violence and aggressive behaviour among young people. He had been suggesting to adopt the Australian model.

Australia banned children under the age of 16 from using social media in December.
