Kathmandu. Cambodia’s Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries is considering introducing a disaster insurance scheme for modern agricultural cooperatives.

According to the Khmer Times news platform, Khim Finnan, the ministry’s deputy secretary and spokesman, said that climate change has severely affected Cambodia’s agricultural sector this year. This includes problems such as drought and floods.

The article states that the proposed agricultural insurance system aims to help farmers cope with the damage caused by natural disasters. Especially during the rainy season when unpredictable weather patterns can jeopardize crop production and family income.

The preliminary report of the National Disaster Management Committee from July to September showed that the drought has destroyed more than 200,000 hectares of paddy fields in 10 provinces. The latest floods in September have also affected about 160,000 hectares of paddy fields in 10 provinces.

However, there are 40 insurance companies in Cambodia. The scope of agricultural insurance is still limited. – Agency
