Last year, 2,612 cases were registered and 1,122 people were arrested. Of those arrested, 72.1 per cent were between 20 and 30 years old. Which is the largest demographic.

The NOI has set up 25 traffic crime investigation teams. They are currently working in city and state police agencies across Korea. These teams will work as a dedicated team for car accident insurance fraud. It has targeted intentional accidents, exaggerated traffic accident damage, and collusion with concerned parties, such as hospitals and repair shops, as the main targets of the crackdown.

The NOI also plans to apply the organized crime provisions of the Criminal Act such as criminal organization charges, systematic fraud and impose stiffer penalties and freeze criminal revenue derived from insurance fraud under the pre-conviction forfeiture and forfeiture system.

“Auto insurance fraud is a serious crime,” said Park Seong-joo, head of NOI. It threatens people’s lives and organs and increases the financial burden. We will react more strongly to systematic fraud, including criminal organization charges. —Agency
