Magnitude 7.4 earthquake hits Philippines

Kathmandu. Philippine authorities have issued a “catastrophic” tsunami warning after a 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck the Mindanao region on Friday morning.

Tsunami waves up to 3 meters (10 feet) high are expected to hit coastal areas of the Philippines, officials said. A tsunami warning has been issued in Indonesia, 300 km from Mindanao, where the quake was centered. The warning has been issued for the Indonesian regions of North Sulawesi and Papua.

According to Philippine officials, the tsunami waves are expected at 11:43 a.m. local time.

The Institute of Volcanology and Seismology urged people living in coastal areas to “move to higher ground immediately”.
