Kathmandu. The deadline to ban TikTok in the US has now been extended until December 16. The deadline was initially set to end on September 17. However, US President Donald Trump has announced a 3-month extension. This is the fourth time Trump has extended the ban.

On September 15, a day before Trump’s announcement, the US and China agreed in Madrid on a framework to resolve problems related to the app. This information was given by Li Chenggang, China’s senior trade negotiator.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote, “The agreement is almost reached on whether or not to allow the app to operate in the United States.” ’

“I will be meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Friday, where we will determine whether China will keep its stake in the app,” Trump told reporters. ’

In 2024, the US Congress passed legislation requiring TikTok’s Chinese owner ByteDance to sell its US business or ban the app. The bill was signed by former President Joe Biden.

The US had said that it would ban TikTok citing national security concerns. There are fears that the Chinese government could gain access to users’ data. The US wants TikTok to be owned by American companies rather than Chinese companies.
