Kathmandu. The U.S. State Department has announced major changes to its non-immigrant visa interview program. These changes will come into effect from September 2 this year.

The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS) has reported these changes. Reversing the February 18 policy, the new rule tightens eligibility. Applicants under 14 years of age and above 79 years of age will now need a personal interview, with specific visa categories and renewal exceptions.

According to the State Department, the purpose of this change is to increase security. However, this has raised concerns about increased processing time and accessibility among passengers. Under the new guidelines, most non-immigrant visa applicants will face mandatory consular interviews. It will exempt A-1, A2, C-3, G-1 to G-4, NATO-1 to NATO-6 and TECRO E-1 visa applicants, diplomatic and official visa holders.

“Consulate officials may still need case-by-case or personal interviews on a local basis,” the USCIS said. We advise applicants to visit the embassy’s website for more detailed information about visa application requirements and procedures. ’

The Trump administration said the policy was changed after a “thorough investigation” into the immigration process amid global security concerns. In this, the State Department is emphasizing the flexibility of the authorities to deal with personal risks.

Houston immigration lawyer Steven Brown said after the new USCIS rules, “This can make the applicant wait longer.” I am sure they are basically removing dropboxes for most sections. It will have to wait longer for an appointment and it will be less effective for visa renewal. ’

According to Brown, the need for children’s interviews is absolutely absurd. – Agency
