Kathmandu. Scientists from Canada and China have developed this ‘universal’ kidney after more than a decade of research. It can be transplanted to patients of any blood type.

This successful trial in human samples has the potential to address one of the biggest challenges in the field of organ donation. The main challenge in kidney transplant is the mismatch of the donor’s blood group. As a result, many patients are forced to stay on long waiting lists.

Scientists have solved this problem by using special enzymes. The researchers first took a kidney with ‘A’ blood type. They were then able to remove sugar molecules, or antigens, from the surface of the kidneys with the help of special enzymes.
