Kathmandu. Taiwan: Two young men have been jailed in connection with a shocking incident in Taiwan that recently reduced millions of insurance amounts to murder. On June 20, the Taiwan High Court sentenced Zhang to two years in prison and the mastermind, Liao, to six years in prison.

Zhang tried to defraud five insurance companies under Liao’s plan. For this, he dipped his feet in a bucket of dry ice for 10 hours. As a result, both his legs had to be amputated.

Zhang was a graduate student in Taipei in 2005 when he purchased several insurance policies from five different companies. These included eight types of insurance, including health, life, accident, long-term care, and travel insurance.

According to a report in the South China Morning Post, Zhang was involved in the traumatic incident in 2023, planned by his school friend Liao to kill insurance money. On January 26, 2023, the two bought dry ice from a shop in new Taipei city and returned to Liao’s home in Taipei’s Zhongshan district.

There Zhang put his bare feet in a bucket full of dry ice. While Liao tied him to a chair with a plastic rope. So that if the process becomes unbearable, Zhang will not be able to pull it off. Zhang kept his feet on dry ice for 2 a.m. to 10 hours.

Liao also took photos and videos of the entire process with Zhang. Two days later, Zhang was admitted to the hospital’s accident and emergency room. Where he was treated for severe frostbite as well as bone melting, sepsis and rhabdomyolysis under both legs. There both his legs had to be amputated.

The two then falsely claimed to the insurance companies that Zhang was riding a motorcycle late at night. Suddenly his legs began to feel cold. As a result, he developed severe frostbite and had to amputate both legs. They filed a claim of $ 1.4 million (about Rs 193.2 million) under eight policies of five insurance companies.

During this period, a company also paid its share. The other 4 companies found some discrepancies in the claims and rejected the claims. Later, all the five insurance companies reported this to the police. Prosecutors then charged them with cheating and intentionally helping to harm themselves.

The court convicted both of them in the case and sentenced them to jail.
