Kathmandu. US President Donald Trump and his trade war have become a topic of discussion in the world. Along with China and Mexico, Canada has also been on America’s hit list from the beginning. However, news has come out that egg smuggling is more prevalent in the US than drugs amid the trade war.

Eggs are being smuggled from Canada to the world’s most powerful country, the US. This has increased at a time when the US-Canada trade war is at its peak. After analyzing official data on imports and seizures, The Logic has released a report that shows that US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is seizing more eggs and other poultry products than fentanyl drugs. The report presents data, stating that since October 2024, US customs officials have seized 3,768 eggs and poultry-related products, and 352 of them were fentanyl drugs during this period.

Increase in egg smuggling incidents

According to the report, Donald Trump has expressed concern about illegal drug smuggling amid his trade war with Canada and Mexico under his tariff policy. Along with this, eggs, chicken and other poultry products are also banned in the US due to disease concerns, but despite this, this increase in their smuggling has created a crisis. U.S. Customs and Border Protection in Detroit reported a 36 percent increase in egg smuggling cases compared to last year, while the San Diego office near the Mexican border saw a 158 percent increase in egg seizures. Matthew Holmes, public policy director for the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, said more eggs are being smuggled from Canada to the United States than fentanyl.

12 eggs cost about $1,400

The U.S. Department of Justice is investigating whether egg producers have been increasing prices by limiting supply amid the bird flu or avian flu outbreak in the United States. The Wall Street Journal reported that the investigation is in its early stages, focusing on possible price manipulation. Earlier this year, the price of eggs reached a record high of $4.95 per 1000 pounds (US egg price increase). While in some cities, the price has been seen as high as $10 (about Rs. 1,400). –Agency
