Kathmandu. Nepal has improved in the list of safest countries in the world.
Nepal has moved up four places to 76th position in the List of Safe Countries in the Global Peace Index (GPI) 2025 prepared by the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP). In the year 2024, Nepal is ranked 80th in this list.
Neighboring India has also failed to make it to the top 100 in this list. India is ranked 115th in the GPI index.
Iceland has once again become the most peaceful and safe country in the world. This country shows its long-standing dominance.
Iceland has consistently topped the list since 2008. The list includes 163 independent countries and territories. They represent 99.7 percent of the world’s population.
This index evaluates peace on the basis of three criteria – social security, ongoing domestic or international disputes, and militarization. Iceland has achieved the highest position in all three regions in the year 2025. The reasons for this announcement are low crime rates, strong social trust and lack of military forces.
Iceland is followed by Ireland, New Zealand, Finland, Austria, Switzerland, Singapore, Portugal, Denmark and Slovenia. These countries have been declared as the top 10 most peaceful countries in the world. Europe tops the list of most peaceful countries.
Sub-Saharan Africa and the Middle East are among the least peaceful countries. Russia, Ukraine, Sudan, Congo and Yemen are at the bottom of the index. At the same time, South Africa has also recorded a significant decline in peace. Countries such as Bangladesh and Pakistan have declined due to civil unrest and repression.
The number of conflicts in the world has reached the highest level since World War II. There have been only three conflicts this year.
