According to a Reuters report, the fear has been created after the US threatened to “overthrow” the government of Nicolas Maduro in Venezuela. As a result, international airlines have started canceling their flights. Brazil’s Goal, Colombia’s Avianca and Tap Air Portugal did not operate their scheduled flights from Caracas on Saturday.

Colombia’s aviation authority, Aeronautica Civil, said the deteriorating security situation and increased military activity in the area posed a “potential risk” to flights in the Macquatia area. TAP Air Portugal also confirmed that it would cancel flights from Oro until next Tuesday. The airline said the decision came after US aviation officials warned that there were no security guarantees in Venezuela’s airspace.
Spain’s Iberia Airlines said it would cancel flights to Caracas from Monday until further notice. The company will evaluate the situation and decide when to resume flights to that country.
